This blog is supposed to be about my year long training regimen. Since the season ended about a month ago, I want to fill you in on what I’ve been doing since then.
I thought I might be burned out at the end of the season. I have, after all been commuting to Philly every weekend and training an additional 4-5 days per week. Thankfully, this has not been the case. I dutifully took some time off to do nothing. I believe that lasted all of four days. Then I was eager to get back to the gym.
For about a week I went to the gym without a plan just doing whatever came to mind. I also did some longer distance running just to see if I could. Turns out I can run a few miles but my body does not prefer it. I was surprisingly sore the day after going for a thirty minute run. I think this just goes to show how specifically our bodies adapt to the demands we place on them. I am usually not sore after a full tournament weekend. But running a few miles at a steady pace nearly killed me.
Now I am transitioning from just messing around and keeping my fitness to getting back on an actual plan. For the next six weeks I will be emphasizing building up my work capacity. This does not mean I will try that thirty minute run again. It does mean I will be doing higher volumes of interval training (which I enjoy more anyway). I will also be working on core strength and muscular endurance.
