Fitness Testing May: t-test, 40, sprint fatigue

fitness testing Jul 01, 2011

This is the list of the fitness tests I’ve be using to measure my progress:

1. timed mile
2. 30 m sprint fatigue test
3. t test
4. 40 yard sprint time
5. 300 meter sprint time
6. standing vertical

I've previously discussed my rationale for each test.

Recently, I did the t-test, 40 m sprint, and 30 m sprint fatigue test

The last time I did these tests was way back in January.

All tests were done in cleats on grass.  The weather and ground conditions were close to ideal.

My Results

1.  t-test

I switched the course from meters to yards so that I could compare my data to some norms.  I can't compare to my previous t-test results in January (12.7 seconds).  But according to this website, my result of 11.41 seconds is "good".

2.  40 yard sprint

I am pleased to report my bet time yet!  6.11 seconds.

This is faster than January's 6.32 seconds and March's of 6.54 seconds.  Good to know my speed training was working after all.

This result was surprising to me as I've been feeling slow.  This is what testing is for-it's objective.  "Fast" and "slow" are all relative.  Obviously I feel slower because I've been practicing with Scandal.  Hard not to feel slow when Scandalite, Sandy Jorgenson, has a 40 yard sprint time one full second faster than mine.  Seriously, how is it even possible to gain one whole second on another human being in 40 yards?  Ok, so I still feel slow.

3.  Sprint fatigue test

This is the third time I've done this test. I believe we finally have the methodology perfected.  The test is somewhat difficult to do with only one timer because each sprint needs to be recorded while the clock is running. The sprinter needs to be warned of when the rest interval will be over and she needs to get back to the starting gate at the correct time. The first time I did this test, I timed my approach so that I'd be moving through the start gate at the correct time.   But this doesn't make sense since the first sprint is a stopped start. This is the reason my individual sprints from November are faster.  However, I believe this months test is a lot more accurate in measuring what it's supposed to measure.

Each sprint was begun from a standing start at the sound of "go" from the timer.

times in seconds

  1. 7.62
  2. 8.24
  3. 8.40
  4. 8.70
  5. 8.83
  6. 9.06
  7. 8.96
  8. 8.91
  9. 8.60
  10. 9.01

1.44s between my fastest and slowest. Overall power maintenance is 91% which is excellent. (here is how you calculate the results) Data looks fairly consistent with no outliers so I'd say this a valid and excellent result. Speed endurance is one of my strengths, though speed is not.

Overall I'm pleased with my results this month. I am wishing I had a better agility test as the t-test is not very ultimate specific. I'll definitely be trying out Tim's serpentine agility test soon.
